Welcome to Dice Lords

An Epic Adventure with cards and dice!

Dice Lords is a fast-paced solo or cooperative adventure game that fits in your pocket—but delivers the heart of a classic RPG! It takes inspirational flair from IPs such as Conan, Zelda, D&D, and LOTR. Dice Lords is modular, so every game presents new choices, new dangers, and new paths to victory. It's designed to be easy to set up, hard to master, and endlessly fun. With only 6 HP, the odds are stacked against you. But with every card you draw and every die you roll, you write your own tale of courage—or defeat.

The Mechanics

  • Suits Set the Scene: Each card suit represents a type of challenge—Hearts are Events, Spades are Traps, Clubs are Enemies, and Diamonds are Mystic Tests.

  • Face the Unknown: Choose between a face-up challenge you know or a mysterious face-down card—your future is in your hands!

  • Roll to Survive: Tough decision making and a little bit of luck are the keys to success!

  • Treasure or Trouble: Use treasure cards to heal, add dice, or flee encounters—but spend them wisely! If you complete your session with an inventory full of treasure, level up before beginning the next game!

Diverse Regions

Dice Lords features biome-themed event tables, each bringing unique atmosphere, enemies, and surprises. Each biome reshapes your journey and demands new strategies.

  • The Central Plains - generally safe but beware of the Scarlet Hunter.

  • The Frostfang Peaks – trolls, hidden paths, and dragon-haunted caves.

  • The Barren Sea – shifting sands, raiders, and a living storm.

  • Wildroot Vale – dense jungles, ancient ruins, and towering beasts.

Note

When I created Dice Lords, I had one goal in mind: to capture the feeling of a full-scale adventure RPG in the simplest form possible—no apps, no miniatures, no prep, no tomes, to endless rules, no complications. Just a deck of cards, a few dice, and the thrill of unknown dangers waiting to be revealed.

I grew reading fantasy and playing Zelda and Final Fantasy, but I’ve always loved the elegance of minimal games. Dice Lords is my attempt to put both in a minimal system: the freedom and discovery of a big adventure, distilled into a quick, flexible, and deeply replayable format.

Every decision in the game—whether to flip the known card or risk the mystery, whether to spend treasure or save it for later—is meant to make you feel like a hero staring down fate. You’ll curse the dice. You’ll celebrate the perfect draw. And win or lose, the journey will always feel like your story.

Thanks for taking this quest. I hope it’s the first of many.

N.D.

Is this one perhaps related to the Japanese „sub-cult-classic” Dice Quest (だいす★くえすと) and/or its spiritual successor Family Dice (ファミリー・ダイス)? I know I really like those back in the day, especially the first 3 in the DQ line and its horror themed spin-offs.

No, this is not related to either of those titles. I haven't checked either of those out. I'll look into them!

Please do, by all means! Crazy that it's from 1988 / 1989! Long before Greywulf's 3 Dice Dungeon or Ganesha's Four Against Darkness. Way ahead of its time! Well, sorry for the off-topic comment. Looking forward to this one here, though!

Thank you! I did a quick search, it seems pretty hard to find and there were several versions made. Any idea where I can find more information aside from BGG?

I’m afraid nowadays most of them are only available from domestic vintage retailers, secondhand stores and online auctions. They must be pretty expensive, though... The original materials of the IP’s spiritual successor, Family Dice, seem to be still available (in Japanese) on the designer’s site:
